Wombats,
ANZAC Day has over the years come to symbolise solemn remembrance for those who
have fallen, patriotism, and celebration of ANZAC Culture and that of the
Diggers. Overseas and away from home I think ANZAC day really helps to emphasise
the real connection between Australian Expats, Australia and our Singapore/Asian
hosts and other Allies with whom we served with. This connection is over and
above our normal everyday lives and is so often lost as we go about our day to
day activities. It was not long ago that our grandfathers and fathers where
fighting arm and arm with the relatives of those same Singaporeans you were
probably cursing at today over their inability to indicate when they changed
lanes or speak non-singlish. Don’t make this just another Sunday and make the
effort to head to Kranji War Memorial for the Dawn Service. The spirituality of
the bag pipes & the bugle playing The Last Post at one of Australia’s largest
overseas war memorials is something that should be experienced and treasured. As
is tradition the Club will be laying a wreath on behalf of all current and
former members. As a tip make sure you know where you are going before jumping
in the taxi/car and note that the journey is about 30mins from Orchard Road.
This weekend marks what will be a busy 6 weeks for the Wombats and the start of
the heart of the season , that will include a Bill Niko Cup match, the Changi
Cup tour to KL, the Manila 12’s & Orphanage Footy Clinic, our annual Quiz night
and the Wombats taking on the AIS Shark Dad’s (see the updated calendar below).
Sponsor Support
We are lucky at the Wombats to have some great sponsors so show you support with
them and help out the club. For those working in town the Bull & Bear and
Molly’s offer great lunch time specials and environments for business lunches.
All three venues (Bull & Bear, Molly’s & BQ) offer private rooms upstairs which
are great for private events such as
Wombats, farewell’s and birthday’s - just ask Hinks! Every dollar you spend at
these bars goes towards helping out the Club. If you have an upcoming BBQ or
party then give The Butcher a call to sort out the food and then get 6-Drunkmen
to deliver the beer and cider. With the Wombat baby boom continuing make sure
your Mrs knows that they get great Maternity & Nursing wear form Mothers En
Vogue. At all Club sponsors members get exclusive discounts so take advantage of
it and support those who support the Club.
Wombat Quiz Night
Tony “Frawls” Barber will be back again for the 2010 Wombat Quiz night which
will be held Saturday May 22nd at 8pm, save the date with your Mrs’ and start
getting your table together now as this sells out every year and will be a key
night for raising money for the Manila Football Clinic & Orphanage visit.
We need player support for the upcoming tours (KL & Manila) originally we had
planned to enter two teams for the Manila 12’s, a key theme with this year’s
football calendar was to introduce more Football games and the Manila 12s will
offer the opportunity for 5 quality games, so get behind this tour and confirm
your participation by emailing:
tours@singaporewombats.com
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday, let’s kick this Season off well with a
big turn out on Sunday at Kranji, Dempsey & the Bull & Bear for the Pies v Dons
& Two Up Sunday Session.
Cheers
El Presidente...
